Glenn,
The Water pump typically goes bad when the seals fail and it starts to
leak.  If it isn't leaking, I doubt that is your problem.  As to the
temperature of the engine, Mid range on the gauge is correct (maybe even
a little higher).  If you have done all the things you mention and it is
still over heating, you may have blockage in the coolant channels of the
block.
