If you're moving a thousand pounds that's sitting on castors, all-thread
can be strong enough.  It's not particularly good steel, but it's not
pot-metal either.  

The acme threads are superior for load movement because they are
square.  This eliminates the side thrusting conventional angled threads
impart.  You're used to acme threads on screw type scissor jacks for
cars.  

Mcmaster Carr sells lengths of acme thread rod for probably as good a
price as you're going to find.  They also will probably have the gears
you need.
