Just to amplify on this a bit. Ball screws are inordinately expensive
new (depending upon diameter, over $100/ft). The reason for this is
that their most typical use is in precision machining and positioning
devices which must maintain indexing to exceedingly small tolerances.
However, a ball screw which is far too worn for that purpose may still
be quite useful for the purposes described in the post. The "where to
look" would include rebuilders of precision machining equipment, custom
machine builders or machine shops with CNC machining equipment which do
their own equipment repairs.
