My favorite method for this is an old toothbrush using baking soda
dissolved in water. Be very careful not to get any of this mildly
caustic solution inside the battery or it will neutralize your acid.
While you're there, wipe all the oily dirt and sand off the top of
your battery, too. Why? Try connecting an ohmeter across that dirt
some time.
