Your drinking mechanic friend does you no favours by suggesting that you
tighten the clearances.
I'd guess that 75% of the MG engines in service have thrashed rocker
shafts/rocker arm bushes, and no amount of tightening clearances will make up
for that. Check your rockers by trying to wiggle an unloaded one back and
forth (in the plane of the rockers and pushing forward and backward). Then
get the rockers rebushed and replace the shaft if needed.
Another possibility is the generator bearing. Remove the fan belt and fire it
up to see if the noise goes away. Obviously, only do this for a half minute
or so, unless you want to risk over-heating.
