I am getting a rattle that sounds like it is valve noise. I set my MGA 1500 to
.017" warm and still made noise. Now I set it to .015". The ticking is gone
but there is a loose rattle sound coming from the generator side of the motor,
kinda towards the front. I remember my water pump made a similar noise when it
went out on my MGB, but there is no play in the fan on this car and no leak. A
local mechanic said I could have a cracked piston or loose wrist pin. My oil
pressure is great. The local MG guru (who drinks a bit. Ya gotta love this
guy, great mechanic but hard to motivate) said it's valve noise. Said to
tighten the valve to .010". Said he always does. That's the B 1800 setting.
Same motor. No problems. I'm a little paranoid to set them that tight. Any
suggestions? Really sounds like something flopping around in there. Almost a
dieseling sound. Heard best at idle. Doesn't seem to get louder when revved.
Actually gets drowned out.
Cheers,
Scott
