I've owned two Bs. Both had a slight RPM drop when the clutch was
depressed.
On any stick shift engine, when the clutch is disengaged, the throwout
bearing pushes against the springs in the pressure plate. The springs
are compressed to release the clutch. The spring pressure is
transferred to the front thrust flange on the crankshaft, which pushes
against the front thrust bearing (on most engines it's part of one of
the main bearings) mounted in the block. Increased friction at this
point can cause an RPM drop. It's easy to extrapolate from there re:
worn out or scored surfaces.
