Bill,
You need to back up a step or two. First off, you need to remember that
the timing pointer will be at TDC twice during the full engine cycle.
You need to be certain that you are timing on #1, not #4. Switch off.
Crank the engine over until the timing notch on the pulley is aligned
with the pointer. Take the valve cover off. I know --- do I have to?
Yes! With this alignment you must be certain that the rockers for
cylinder #1 are both loose. If not, you're probably at #4. Crank the
engine over another 360 degrees until the TDC mark is aligned and the #1
rockers are loose. Now take a look inside of your distributor and see
where the rotor is pointing. That's where #1 spark plug wire must be
positioned. As Picard would say, "make it so." Now connect your plain
old light bulb to the distributor input wire on the side of the
distributor. Turn on the key. With the timing marks still set at TDC,
turn the distributor CCW until the light goes out. Now turn the
distributor until the light just comes on and tighten the distributor
clamp. Make certain that plug wire #1 is in the right spot and go
around the distributor checking that the order (CCW) is 1-3-4-2.
You are now statically timed for TDC at #1. IMHO, Colortune is an
interesting gadget for seeing what happens when you make changes to the
carburetor adjustments. To check the spark, just look and see if it'll
jump an air gap. Pull off a plug wire and stick a screwdriver into the
end that normally goes onto the plug. Holding the screwdriver by the
insulated handle, hold the screwdriver about 1/8" away from the engine
while you crank it over with the key on. You should see a spark. If
not, something's amiss in the coil circuit.
Please let me know after you've done these.
