Hi Bill,
I don't know that Colourtune is the tool for static setting of
ignition. It might work, but the alternative is simple and it we know it
does work. Just make up a test lamp with a 12v bulb and two leads w
alligator clips. Clip one to the point spring or to the lead to the
points and the other to ground such as distributor body.
As you turn the distributor, the light will illuminate when the
points open. It's when the points open that the spark plug fires. Your
test lamp will be very visible and, as it's an electric way to test,
sufficiently accurate. An alternative is to have a helper watch the
ammeter. It will flick when the points open. The test lamp is easier.
White & black wires won't matter for this test, though do try to get them
correct eventually. CB on the coil stands for Contact Breaker (points)
.
SInce the TD's distributor drive gear is a gear, not a drive dog, it's
very easy to get the thing way out of position as one thinks it is where
it belongs. Try to position the distrib in the engine as is shown in the
illustration of the handbook, but it can take many in-and-out cycles to
get it right for those of us who remove the distrib only once a year.
