This is correct. The thickness of the clamping surfaces must be the same.
It also helps to tighten the
bottom clamp between the manifolds first. The intake will hang up on the
pin between the intake ports
 and not let the bottom of the intake seat all the way. Sometimes the hole
for the pin is too tight.
