We didn't used to use any sealant on the brake ring gaskets of a J type and
I can't recall any problems from this area. However oil can come down the
two top studs that clamp the front and back casings together, originally
these have a special copper washer under the nut, special in that the OD is
small so it sits in a recess in the rear case. A more recent modification is
a plastic type of washer, we also used some blue Hylomar on the studs to
help stop leaking. The other common leak point is the joint between the
solenoid and the hydraulic housing, DPOs attemps to remove solenoids without
the special spanner often resulted in burrs (and the leak only happens in
overdrive), a file and a new washer (a curious metric size from memory,
fitted to some sump plugs) usually cures the fault.

breather on it. We have a 1/4" breather line ran from the top of the
gearbox to a catch tank.

didn't use the right sealant for the job. We're going to go through it
again using better sealant, safety wire on all the bolts, etc. Even though
its a Triumph we'd like to hold the leaks to a minimum!
