Robert,
Have someone perform a "leak down test" This will tell you if your valves
are leaking, your rings are bad, or your head gasket leaks. Simply put, they
bring each cylinder to its compression stroke, then use compressed air to
pressurize each cylinder, then check how the pressure holds, listening at
the carbs for hissing, and checking the radiator for bubbles.
This is a brief description, I hope it helps.
