My order of things to check are as follows:
There is a 3 conductor plug in the harness, about 8" from the starter.
Check the connections there.
The starter Solenoid could be bad or sticking. When you turn the key to
start does the ammeter show a larger discharge than it does in run? If
so, the starter probably is sticking from old grease, or some turns in
the colenoid could be shorted, causing not enough of a magnetic field to
pull the starter in.
The ignition switch could be bad.
