Okay, so a pit in your garage is a bad idea, and illegal to boot. But a
root cellar would be real cool, everyone should have one. So ya put the
root cellar in the garage (cause there isn't room in your basement), and
*just by coincidence* ;-), the stairway to the cellar goes right down the
centre of the garage, and of course to get the door of the cellar open and
clear the stairs, you need a six foot long passage between the stairs and
the door. Now, you should have a bannister around the stairwell, but
*because* you *occasionaly* park your car there as well, you had to
compromise and put one of those basement coal-chute/tornado shelter kind of
doors over the *passageway* and stairs instead. But then, like a lot of
things, you just *never got around* to actually digging out the cellar,
after all that work to put in the stairs, the passageway and that silly
door covering the whole thing. But your are going to, honest, just after
you finish restoring your MGB, which is now parked over the thing anyway,
so you can't get in there to do it....
