I'm in the process of building a house/garage and have designed the garage
to fit a pillar type car lift. I'll be able to install the lift later, when
I can afford it, since the lift is bolted to the finished concrete floor and
the ceiling height is 12'.

Now get this. When we submitted the plans to the county (Sonoma, Ca.)
building department the inspector saw the lift on the floor plan. He
discretely recomended that we remove all references to the lift from the
plans. A lift in a garage implies that I'll be working on cars in there,
so I'd need to reclasify the building commercial. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO
WORK ON A CAR IN A RESIDENTIAL GARAGE. THEY ARE FOR STORAGE OF CARS ONLY.
"Yes, I know its absurd." he said, "I work on my car in my garage, but
that's what the code says."

So, now you know why our hobby has that extra thrill to it. IT'S ILLEGAL!

Keep on wrenching.:-)
