Well, I should be working but I can't resist the temptation to post to this
mail list.
I'm looking for constructive feedback, I'm not trying to criticize the host
club, I think they did a really good job setting up the event.
While I was at the VTR in Ashville, NC, I participated in several events. While
the events themselves were not meant to be dangerous, there were some
participants that perhaps pushed the limits of sensible driving. For instance,
in the blindfold rallye, several of the drivers nearly caused accidents by not
following the navigator instructions. The most blatent (IMHO) insensible
driving was a fellow in a TR8 that kept lighting up his tires _in the parking
lot of the hotel_! As a spectator, I truely believed that both the above
examples put me in jeopardy. That's me as in personally. I'm sure one or more
of the host club volunteers felt the same about this, as they would have been
much closer to being in harm's way.
Now, if you are hosting an event like this (VTR National for example) what
steps can you take to try to maintain sensibility amongst the participants? Can
you DSQ drivers? If you do, how do you do it without being pushy etc.? And, how
can you insure compliance by the participants? Can you take their entry
credentials away? Should you merely refund them and send 'em packing?
I know if I were involved in setting up an event like this that I would devote
a lot of attention to details such as safety etc. How do the host clubs deal
with these issues? I assume, also, that there must be some sort of event
liability coverage (just in case). Where does one go to line that sort of thing
up, Lloyds of London?
