Well, events have conspired to pick a date for the SOL Winter
Tour I mentioned. Basically, on Sunday, January 30, Shel Hall
is going to be in the Monterey/Carmel area, with no doubt some
ubiquitous rental box, but what the heck. I've been in touch
with TeriAnn, who after all introduced me to the route for the
annual DBTBCM tour, and she has another one that winds its way
through Corralitos and the beach. We're coordinating efforts
at that end separately and will have more information as it
becomes available.
What I'm proposing is a caravan tour from Santa Clara for
South Bay (and for that matter, East Bay) SOLs who would
like the safety in numbers approach on our way to Santa
Cruz. And I had the perfect spot in mind:
Stan's Doughnuts
on El Camino Real near Kiely
Santa Clara, CA
This is nominally right across El Camino from the park where
we had our adventures in heat prostration last summer. Stan's
is not only my favorite local doughnut shop, it also has a large
parking area, makes hot coffee, and even has a breakfast/lunch
counter if you want to grab something more nourishing than one
of his specialties. (I recommend against it; go for the cinnamon
spirals, they're just absolutely unbelievably good.)
I'll have time information later on for everyone except Daren
Stone, who should be there at 7:30 AM. :-) The rest of us will
probably depart around 8:30 to 9:00 to give us time to traverse
the Santa Cruz mountains and have most of the day to visit with
Shel, buy sausages, etc.
Oh, and in honor of Shel's rental car, non-Britcars are welcome
on the tour (I may or may not, for example, get The Green Car
running well enough that I'd like to spend a whole day in it).
More news as it happens, and other suggestions for places to visit
between Santa Clara and Carmel will be entertained. No, I don't
think we will be able to sneak onto the track at Laguna Seca so
I can show you the fast line around... and yes, of COURSE you'll
be able to see it, it'll be far enough away from where I'm driving!
