process of tracking down what it actually is), four cylinder, looks to be about
2000 cc. The biggest problem I face is the missing carby. If I knew what to
look for I might be able to find what I need locally or through some old
restorers around the place, can anyone help?

Big question #1: Do you have the intake manifold?
If so, then we can ask other questions.

#2 - Diameter of the intake port (i.e. the big hole where the carb bolts to)
This hole should be the same diameter as the throat of the missing carb.

#3 - Number of bolts or studs that hold the carb onto the manifold, usually two
or four.

#4 - Bolt or stud spacing, center-to-center

#5 - Diameter of bolts or studs

#6 - Is it a side-draft or down-draft carb? This was discussed last week.

The extent of my vast (if measured in Angstroms) knowledge of
Armstrong-Siddeleys must allow that yours could have been designed without an
intake manifold, the carb bolting directly to the head, in which case the
questions above would apply to the port in the head.

Start with the assumtion that it was an SU, just because that's all I've ever
seen on 'tween-wars British cars other than Rolls. The port diameter expressed
in fourths of an inch is the SU model number. Example: an SU H6 is 1-1/2"
throat diameter. You can probably find something newer that will fit so your
car will at least run.

If you are concours minded I recommend advertising in a British car magazine.
Maybe some kind soul will send you a photo of his.
