One possible reason the old guy avoids soldered connections is fatigue.
The end of the wire that gets soldered is solid, and chances are the wire
itself is soft and braided. At the point where the solid solder ends, the
wires are subject to minute flexing movement. Over time, this flexing at
the joint between the stiff solid part and the soft braided part will start
to break the individual strands.
I wouldn't worry about your wiring, unless you drive 482 miles on gravel
roads everyday. But do make sure that you tie down the wires where possible,
so they are not loose but clamped to some surface, minimizing relative flex.
