Try replacing the condenser (or just disconnect it temporarily). Even
tho it's probably a non-polarized mylar capacitor, I wonder if it might
get "polarized" over time and may leak excessively if the voltage is
suddenly reversed. (I have no experience to base this guess on, but it is
the only thing that I can think of that might make the engine run rougher
after the swap - it's an easy thing to try in any case.)
