Gordy and Jamie,
Funny you all should mention this. I just wrote an article about that,
at least the basics of the starting system, for the Oct. issue of The
Brickline.
Gordy, you have a 74 which has that little relay on the rear top of the
pass. fender well. Jamie, your 75 doesn't. For 74, the Feds regulated
that the seatbelt MUST be connected for the car to start. The relay on
the 74's fender well, is an "emergency bypass" switch. I've been trying
to figure out the wiring on the 74's for some time.
Both the 74's and 75's have xmission Park/neutral safety switches.
If something is smoking, it is drawing too much current. Normally this
is due to dirty electrical connections at the solenoid or the starter.
Keep in mind that starter draws, beaucoup current! If you hold the ign.
key in the start position too long, you can fry the wiring.
The other possibility/probability is that the starter solenoid contacts
have welded together. This is the only way the starter can continue to
run, after you turn the ign. switch to the on, or off position.
I know this is a little curt, but I don't want to give the hole article
away.
