I don't think any more people would buy an autocross-specific set of wheels
& tires as a result of going to a spec tire than already do. Those who are
inclined to do so already do it. Those who, like me, just like to own one
set of tires aren't likely to change. UNLESS the chosen spec tire is
something like a Michelin Pilot. As long as they keep the cost of the spec
tire down in the average range, I don't see a problem.
And if we do go with a spec tire, it would be good to enforce a minimum
tread depth. I'd go with what's legal in most states: 2/32nds. Measured
BEFORE competition, not after. And be liberal, but specific about how many
places the tread depth must be measured and found to be below minimum
before it is called bad. (uneven tire wear runs rampant in STS)
