When I did mine 3 years ago, Luc was the recommended clutch choice. Having =
had both Borg and Laycock pressure plates fail, I was happy to buck up for =
the clutch made by Porsche's supplier. So far..no problems and it's outlast=
ed all the other ones.=20

Your chatter upon clutch engagement was likely the failing pressure plate o=
r possibly oil on the friction plate but since you did this so long ago, th=
e oil problem would have reasserted itself quickly if you didn't replace th=
e rear engine seal at the time.=20

While you're in there, here are the rings you need to do.=20

Replace the rear engine seal.=20
If your ring gear is in rough shape, replace it while you've got the flywhe=
el in your hand.=20
Have the flywheel resurfaced at a machine shop. There' s no need to lighten=
it unless you're on your way to building a race car.=20
If the starter pinion gear is in rough shape, replace it, too.=20
Since it's in your hand=E2=80=A6have the starter overhauled=20
If you haven't done it already, drill and pin or bolt the release fork onto=
the release shaft so you've got more to rely on than the screw that's doin=
g the job. Loctite the screw.=20

Aligning relates to centering the friction plate when you bolt the pressure=
plate onto the flywheel. The clutch kit will come with a plastic tool for =
doing this. The object is to make sure the centers of the pilot bushing, fr=
iction plate and pressure plate are aligned so that when you offer the tran=
smission to the engine back plate, the transmission input shaft slides into=
the pilot bushing nice and smoothly and the splines on the shaft engage sm=
oothly with those on the friction plate.=20

Correction...=20
In 2000 I bought a LUX kit from TRF. I paid $139. I doubt it came with the =
Gunst style bearing. BPNW carries that bearing and brass sleeve for $130 pa=
rt number GRB211HD. Not sure which pressure plate and clutch disk to buy to=
go with the Gunst bearing if that setup is desired. So confusing.=20
All I know is when I bought the 3 piece LUX kit and the pilot bushing, ever=
ything seems to work great. On TRF site. Blue book. There is a listing for =
a Laycock brand 3 piece set for $184 RFK116. Must be what I bought but the =
prices have climbed. I had a fourth gear shaft to use for alignment. So I d=
idn't need the 5 piece LUX set currently being sold by BPNW.=20

So it seems the vote is to find an original Laycock clutch set. I saw one s=
ell on eBay not long ago for close to the price of the magic clutch set. No=
t clear which plate and bearing to use with an original pressure plate. I r=
ead the original clutch will have aged and need new silicon grease packed s=
omewhere...the clutch plate springs? Again, confusing.=20

So I am still not sure what would be the best clutch set.=20

Also, I read about aligning the transmission to the engine...what does that=
entail beyond lining the locating pins and bell housing bolts. Seems to me=
there is no room for mis-alignment! Wow. I must have gotten lucky.=20

I should mention, I replaced my clutch because of chatter felt in the rear =
end / transmission when I let the clutch out. Something was not releasing. =
Bearing, loose clutch plate...something. But the kit I installed in 2000 fi=
xed it.=20

So what is the best solution???=20
A mix of Gunst bearing and original pressure plates?=20

Dale, If you can get a copy of Nelson Reidel's piece on a 100,000 mile clut=
ch it would be worth your while. A combo of cross drilling to improve the f=
ork stability, a Sachs pressure plate and Gunst throw out bearing is the ma=
in theme. I do believe I still have the piece but see if you can pick it up=
thru the 6-Pack. Ashford Little might be able to dig it up for you. We bot=

s package on 3 TR'S. A beautiful working smooth clutch.=20

OK, now that it was determined that I should replace the clutch, what=20
does everyone like? I was thinking about using TRF Magic Clutch.=20

Any opinions out there?=20

I've used the Sachs and the Lux clutch kits with good results with the RHP=
=20
Bearing.=20
The key is to get the Bronze sleeve.=20
There has been a rash of bad stock sleeves. The tolerance is too small and=
=20
as they heat up they bind.=20
I recently got one the wouldn't even fit on the transmission snout.=20

> In 2000 I bought a LUX kit from TRF. I paid $139. I doubt it came with=
the
> Gunst style bearing. BPNW carries that bearing and brass sleev=
e for $130
> part number GRB211HD. Not sure which pressure plate and =
clutch disk to buy
> to go with the Gunst bearing if that setup is de=
sired. So confusing.
> All I know is when I bought the 3 piece LUX ki=
t and the pilot bushing,
> everything seems to work great. On TRF sit=
e. Blue book. There is a listing
> for a Laycock brand 3 piece set fo=
r $184 RFK116. Must be what I bought but
> the prices have climbed. I=
had a fourth gear shaft to use for alignment. So
> I didn't need the=
5 piece LUX set currently being sold by BPNW.
>
> So it seems =
the vote is to find an original Laycock clutch set. I saw one
> sell =
on eBay not long ago for close to the price of the magic clutch set.
&gt=
; Not clear which plate and bearing to use with an original pressure plate.=
I
> read the original clutch will have aged and need new silicon gre=
ase packed
> somewhere...the clutch plate springs? Again, confusing.<=
br>>
> So I am still not sure what would be the best clutch set.<b=
r>>
> Also, I read about aligning the transmission to the engine..=
.what does
> that entail beyond lining the locating pins and bell hou=
sing bolts. Seems
> to me there is no room for mis-alignment! Wow. I =
must have gotten lucky.
>
> I should mention, I replaced my clu=
tch because of chatter felt in the rear
> end / transmission when I l=
et the clutch out. Something was not releasing.
> Bearing, loose clut=
ch plate...something. But the kit I installed in 2000
> fixed it.
=
>
> So what is the best solution???
> A mix of Gunst bearing=
and original pressure plates?
>
> ?Sent from my Atari 2600?<br=
