All I would add to Stan's useful input is that when removing the original ring
on the engine block,
it's worth spending a little time with a fine pointed screwdriver and a rag
soaked in a cleaning
agent and be thorough in cleaning the groove. Any deposit still in there when
you come to fit the
new ring followed by the filter adaptor can result in an uneven seal and a leak.
As for the life of the ring under the adaptor, mine has been in place now for
over seven years and
has neither leaked or shown signs of collapse.
