Shawn,

I think you're right on.  At least in my case metal fatigue was in play with 
the diff crossmember as the split in the "arm" toward the top of the 
crossmember looks like a combination of rust/corrosion and constant added 
stress on the thin metal, like bending metal back and forth to break it. 
The new crossmember is heavy guage steel box 2" x 2" and should outlast the 
rest of the frame.  Maybe eventually I'll be able to do a frame off and by a 
new frame from my friend Tony at RATCO
