Bob---I agree that there is so much bearing surface on these halfshafts,
they should rarely cause a problem. But..a problem and unwanted sounds
can be two different things. Because of this belief, I went into the
differential and took out the 95% of the play caused from worn parts
between the planet and sun gears (as Jim Franks referred to)
Well, that was fun but most of the click and some of the clunk was
still there when changing gears. To shorten this yarn, I then replaced
the passenger side half-shaft, (which had far more play than the drivers
side)
Now, it takes special circumstances to get this sound back, and one
would really have to listen for it. (My wife hears all of these TR
sounds, and usually just looks over at me to see if I'm reacting)!

As a footnote, these shaft mates separate the most when their respective
wheels are in full droop. Tho it's a good method of testing for wear,
it's difficult to engage "unworn" parts of the pair without some
disassembly.

Shannon,
                I have been having the
same problem and have worked through all the same things including a
disassembly check of the differential. Last week I came to the
conclusion that the only thing left was the spline on the passenger side
half shaft. It does have play, and I think Dick may be right, that is it
is the cause of the clunk. I think what lead me away from considering it
sooner was that it seems so beefy and has such a large bearing area that
one (at least me) would not think it could develop such substantial
play. I would, however eliminate the differential as a suspect first. My
clunk definitely comes from the passenger side rear. Bob Rochlin
