        More likely that you simply need to move the dizzy drive gear a
tooth or two. The dizzy is driven by a slot in the drive gear, and will
engage that slot in only one orientation. The drive gear in turn is
driven by the camshaft, and can be rotated in one tooth increments.
        To move the tach drive away from the fuel pump, remove the dizzy
clamp and lift the dizzy out of the block. Look down in the dizzy drive
opening, and you will see a small gear with a slot in the top. Lift the
gear up just enough to clear the cam drive, rotate one tooth clockwise,
and lower the gear back into the block. Reinstall the dizzy. The tach
drive will now clear the fuel pump.
        Note that the drive gear is helical, and will rotate as you lift
it. Not to worry. Simply keep a solid grip on it and when it clears the
cam rotate one tooth. As you lower it back into the block, it will
rotate in the opposite direction. By keeping track of where the slot
points, you can see if you were successful in reorienting the drive
gear.
        By the way, I use a small bar magnet to lift the gear, you may
find some other tool that is suitable.

I have an early 1968/69 (CC904) engine and understand that the the later
model distributors will work in this motor.  It seems like the 68 dizzy
(dual vacuum advance and retard) sits higher than a 71 model dizzy when
installed.  After installing the 71 model I am having trouble retarding
the timing since the tach cable rubs into the top of a stock AC fuel
pump and restricts further movement.  This wasn't a problem with the 68
dizzy.  Is there supposed to be a difference in the installed height
between these distributors?  Just curious.
