I haven't done the conversion, but maybe I can save you some time and money. I
have a 74 TR6, and a 63 TR4 vintage race car. Both cars are equipped with
identical TR6 brakes, from the master cylinder with booster to the rear drums
and cylinders. The only difference between the cars is the brake pad and lining
material. The brakes on the TR4 are way more powerful, and slow the car down
much, much better than the TR6. The TR6 has semi-metallic pads from one of the
Big 3 suppliers. I am not impressed with them. This winter, I am going to buy a
set of the pads I use in the TR4 for my TR6. I get them from Ted Schumacher at
TSI (NFI), and have been using them in the racer for 5 years. The pads are not
like typical racing pads, they don't need to be warmed up to stop the car, and
they have been very easy on the rotors. In fact, the rotors are in fine
condition and have yet to be turned after 20+ races. I think these pads alone
will make a significant difference in the TR6. I can't remember who makes them
(Performance Pads, maybe?), but if you want them, email me off list and I'll
get you the specifics. Or, call Ted and ask for the carbon kevlar gold brake
pads. I think they go for about $80 a set plus shipping. HTH.
