Walt:
Similar experimentation with my basically stock '76 with no air pump, or
vacuum retard operatrional has resulted in my running my timing at 26
degrees advance with no pinging, great response, good gas mileage, and no
overheating problems whatsoever. I have checked to make sure there isn't
any discrepancy between the flywheel timing marks and actual TDC, so the
numbers are accurate. I use ebetween 91 and 94 octane depending on what I
can find when I fill up, but tend to buy the 94 most of the time.
I have been running it this way for over 2 years and more than 10,000 miles
now so it's not hurting anything that I can see.
What led me to advance my timing so far was a bad stutter on acceleration at
anything less than this setting. This cured the problem for me, and like
you, I can lug my engine way down and it stills pulls cleanly when I put my
foot back on the gas.
Try advancing it further if you like, as long as you don't get to the point
where it pings, there is little or no harm to it.
Good luck,
Cris
