John---Something is indeed wrong when a point gap of .016 doesn't get
the dwell angle down to 35 degrees or less. Check all of your measuring
instruments. As you opened the gap in the points in your attempt to get
the dwell into specs, did you notice that the timing itself also
advanced? It should have...
You didn't say that the oil in the carb damper reservoir was empty, or
just low. If it empties itself, the O-ring at the bottom of this
particular carb is allowing the oil to pass thru it, and the O-ring can
and should be replaced.
Correcting the cause of the two items above may correct the hesitation
problem.
