John---Your gear shift cap must be different than mine, which is like the one as illustrated in 37.17. 04 in the TR6 Repair Manual. (The Bentley may be the same) If you have either of these handy, this is what I was refering to. Either way, when you remove the top cover, you'll get a better look at the bottom side of this cap.
