Howdy fellow Listers,
well here I am again, fix one problem and something else breaks. I was
tooling down central florida interstates today and I partially lost my
brake peddle. Luckily I was one mile from home after an 80 mile journey
(Thank the lord). Here's what happened: car was pulling severely to
left while braking (doesn't normally do that), 30 miles later started
smelling what I thought was something electrical burning, next noticed
smoke coming from left front wheel well. Next brake pedal goes to floor
and does not grab brakes (noticed while at a stop thank god!, then
pumped a couple of times and could get a slight grab of brakes with
pedal. Got home and did not notice any brake fluid leaks, brake
reservoir was full. Smell was fierce in front left wheel well. Jacked
up car, put on jack stands, pulled wheel, and yow! it was some hot in
there. The lugs were too hot to touch, and only on that corner of the
car. After it cooled (didn't use any water to cool!) I noticed that the
brake pads were grabbing the rotor. It is pretty hard to turn the rotor
by hand. The other side you hear only a slight noise or resistance
while spinning the wheel. Should you hear any noise while spinning
wheel? My questions is this; this is a 1975 TR6 with 16PB type calipers
(late style), is it time to rebuild the calipers? Somehow the brake
pads are stuck on the rotors. I don't know the last time the calipers
were rebuilt. The brake pads look good, not much wear at all. I have
had the car a year and have gone through a lot of mechanical fixes and
lottsa learning. I always wanted to learn how to do brakes so it sounds
like this is the time to do it. While I'm doing the brakes over what
other parts should be looked at while it is disassembled? Shoud I go
ahead and replace front bearings also? Is the caliper something that is
easily rebuilt? or how do i tell if it is bad? It sounds like the
pistons seized and they need replacing. Sorry for all the questions and
the long winded story, but this car is a passion of mine. I am still
and apprentice of the 6 pack list and haven't earned my wings yet. I
emphasize yet! I love these cars!
Thanks in advance
