The contest was limited to stickshift cars, BTW.  A Stag owner with an
automatic stalled on the uphill stage without killing the engine.  But that
was cheating.  He was given a special award, however.

Having a closed loop idle control would be paramount to goosing the gas
which was also against the rules (or was it?  I forget).

It was humorous in that the timer would stop the clock if you stalled the
engine.  As such he would walk the course with the contestant.  He had no
trouble keeping up!
