I'd suggest caution....considering....
recommended octane for the stock 8.8-1 motor was 98 RON. This would equal about
94-95 PON if you can find it.
87 PON = (approx) 90 RON....WAY below....
which is not to imply it can't be done.
Using prem. rather than 87 will allow you to run a more normal mixture ratio,
actually burning less gas ("cleaner") and you won't be worrying as much (if at
all) about ("cooling") pre-ign/detonation.
One way or the other, you pay for it. Use less of higher octane, pay more; use
more of lower octane, pay more (and in "bore washing" and oil contamination as
well with richer mixture).
The alum head flows 25% or so better than the stock cast iron item with stock
size inlet valves, which does not imply this cannot be improved upon. BTW, MM
sells the alum. head with oversize 1.4 inlet valve for "more".
