Cap'n -

For once, you're mistaken (and a bloody rare thing it is too). Skip has
a 1500. The 1500s don't have a hydraulic brake light switch. It's
mechanical, and screws into the front of the pedal box (making it a
b%&ch to replace without remoning everything...)

The switch Skip is having trouble with is installed in the "emergency
valve". The valve has both the front and rear circuits feeding into it,
one on either side of a shuttle. When you stomp on the brakes, the
pressure on both sides of the shuttle is even, and nothing happens. If
a line or seal blows, the pressure on that side of the shuttle drops,
and the shuttle gets pushed to that side, closing off that brake
circuit. This leaves you with half a braking system, but the full
effectivenes of that half. The switch in the middle is supposed to
detect that the shuttle has moved, and light a little lamp in the middle
of the dash to say "You only have half your brakes, so get this bugger
fixed!"

Unfortunately for Skip, replacing the switch won't fix his problem. If
the valve is squirting fluid from the switch opening, the o-rings on the
shuttle are shot. Its difficult to get the replacements. Skip, if
your'e really hung up on this, drop me a note off-list and I'll try to
scare up the receipts for the repair parts I used.

BTW: When you get things put back together, bleeding the brakes is a
pain, because you have to re-center the shuttle after every bleed.
