It sure sounds like ignition timing. If the timing is firing the plug whilst
an intake valve is open, you will get flamed out the distributor. (Oooo,
that sounds bad.)

It also sounds like you are randomly turning the dizzy to try to get
something to work. That rarely works! Think it through. You need to set
the #1 cylinder (that's the front one) at top dead center on the compression
stroke. Then you need to put the dizzy in so the rotor is pointing at the #1
plug wire.

Mark the crank pully, or check the location of the timing marks on it, so
that it is accurately indicating TDC, then rotate the engine to the correct
number of degrees mark BEFORE TDC. Turn the dizzy to set the rotor at #1.
It should be static-timed at this point. Then see if it starts and set the
timing with a light.

Check the archives on how to find TDC on cyl. #1.

Another possible problem is valve timing. Are you sure the timing chain
isn't off a tooth or two?

I hope this helps, and would someone please check that I am correct in my
suggestion? I don't have any books here at work. (Maybe I'll put up a
workshop shelf in the office.)
