Bryan,

Thanks for the excellent points; I'm still learning even after having 
bought a kit. Actually, Bill now ships all the machined parts if you 
buy the 'deluxe' kit, so there is no waiting at all. I'm not sure if 
the clutch plate is modified; he says it's a Toyota plate from the 
NAPA parts bin. I'm pretty certain that after every item is taken 
into consideration and the tranny is in the car and running, the 
conversions are very close in price (I believe within $50), but 
again, it depends on what you need.
