noisey lifter?

I've tried it cold, I've tried them hot, I have one lifter that seems to
just intermittently click away.

I've used the screwdriver to the ear at the rocker shaft and on top of the
rockers to no avail.  I just can't seem to find which one starts ticking for
a period, then quiets down, then starts back up again.

Any ideas?   Also, as this is a 1098 10CG motor out of something earlier
than the 65 bodyshell it's in, it has a mechanical fuel pump.  but the
ticking seems to be at the rocker area.
