If getting a part for an car like a Volvo was a problem, you should have 
seen me trying to buy a fuel pump for a Bugatti at Sears back in the 60s.

Despite the fact that Sears was not exactly the first place youd expect to 
find parts for anything not made in Detroit, much less a 30 year old 
antique/exotic it should have been easy. This was because Mr. Bugatti spared 
no expense in building his cars but was not above trying to save a buck when 
he could. For that reason when he built the Type 57 he used all manner of 
beautifully machined and polished aluminum and iron castings but fitted them 
out with pot metal or low cost alloy Stromberg carburetors and AC fuel 
pumps.

In those days every Sears car parts department had a plaque on the wall on 
which were mounted a half dozen or so of the most common fuels pumps that 
Sears sold. Right in the middle of the plaque was the AC fuel pump that was 
installed on my car. Buying a part for it should have been easy. All I had 
to do was point. You can imagine the conversation that took place.

I want a kit for that fuel pump, the one right there on the wall.

What kind of car is it on?

A what? I never heard of that but we dont carry parts for foreign cars 
anyway.

"I don't want a foreign car part.  I want a kit for that fuel pump right 
there."

I wish I could recall the details but this frustrating conversation went on 
and on. After going around like this I never did get my fuel pump kit, at 
least not from Sears.
