I recently did the opposite.  Ten years ago, I installed a stainless lifetime 
guarantee exhause.  It always was loud, but suddenly it became worse.  Upon 
inspection, I found a faulty weld where the pipe was joined to the muffler.  
I could tell that the weld  had been broken for years and had only recently 
opened up more.  Anyway I exchanged it for a new one and find I can now carry 
on a conversation with my passenger.  So if you want a little noise, just 
drill a few holes in the pipe.
