Hello Jack,
no I don't use any abrasive material, as normally the thread
of the scroll is sharp enough to cut away the excess epoxy,
presumed, that you have not build up the material to high,
and that you are patient.
You also can do it in two working cycles, 
in case that you have after grinding no zero-gap in all circumference.
