John,

Looking in the earlier, 30s, catalogues there's no mention of "M" headlights.
However, in the 1945-1960 cat. it mentions MD and MBD headlights.

The prefixes given are,
M. Standard lamp with separate reflector and lens. Reflector held with rubber
bead.
B. Brass [Chrome Body.]
D. Domed Lens.

Both MD and MBD 143 were 90 degree mountings.

The vehicle applications are listed as,

MBD 143. L.H. Export. 12v. double contact.
Austin 10 1946-47. Hire Car 1951-1954.

MD 143. R.H. 12v. Single contact. 90 degree.
Austin 10 1946. Taxi 1948-54. 2 and 5 ton trucks1949-50. Coach 1947-49.

Sorry, I couldn't make it more exotic.

Brian Kelly.
