Lew...   I experienced the same thing with my PB0268. The plating was OLD and 
either 
bright nickel or chrome directly on the steel. It was not a high priced glamor 
look and I 
ass u me d  someone did it as a kool thing to do or a rust reducer which 
didn't. I noticed on a 
photo taken of PB0268 on the Isle of Anglesey in 1955 that the drums were 
painted silver 
(or very, very dirty chrome) and the wheels were black by then - opposite of 
what the 
factory data sheet says. And you're right - none of the factory photos show 
plated drums so 
my belief is pop culture at work...    Tom
