Frank-

Welcome to the salts. As Ardun Doug says it so well, there are no stupid
questions.

The Utah BLM (Bureau of Land Management) sanctions only two organizatrions
to use the Bonneville Salt Flats, USFRA nd SCTA / BNI. Check out
www.saltflats.com, home of our USFRA (Utah Salt Flats Racing Association).
Study "Getting Started in Salt Flats Racing", and "130 & 150 MPH Club
Rules" buttons. Also check out the SCTA / BNI (Southern Calif. Timing
Association / Bonneville Nationals Inc. web page at
http://roadsters.com/scta.html. That'll point you to
http://www.scta-bni.org. Buy a 1999 Rule book for only $7 (applies to both
organizations).

I'm also somewhat new, and decided to just observe this, my first, year.
Joining USFRA is only $35, and the main event is World of Speed on Sept. 22
to 25. SCTA / BNI has a participant membership of $50, and the club has two
events: Aug 14 to 20 trials, and Oct 20-23 finals. To actually run, the
fees are around $200 to $300 (don't have the info in front of me). Safety
inspections are part of it, as well as instruction of first timers.

Remember, as I recently found out, your car will NOT go as fast on the salt
as on hard pavement, due to the greater coefficient of friction of the
surface. Thin narrow tires are used for serious speed. I want to run my
Corvette out there, and the 130MPH Club is the way to start (not much
needed beyond a helmet, and a roll bar if yours is an open top vehicle).
Meet the people and learn a lot. To build you car for the next level, the
150 MPH Club, several rules apply to that and, with increased fire
extinguisher capacity, the higher speed domains. The rule book is your
guide if you want to go over 150.

                    --- Ron

Subject: stupid questions

hello, I am new to this list and have really stupid questions. I have a car
that
I am building for the street but have had an interest in finding out how
fast it
really is. it is a 71 MGB with a fuel injected 350 chevy with a vortech
super
charger, 5 speed and a 90 corvette suspension on a custom frame. now the
question is what is involved in taking this thing on the salt flats ( I
live
here in UT). what kind of safety equipment is required. what modifications
should i make. etc. - thanks in advance.
