This is interesting... As I understand it, the input gear drives the laysha=
ft. Lock the input to the output and you have 1:1 4th gear. To make a clos=
e ratio box, they could have changed the input-layshaft ratio, in which cas=
e the input shafts would not be interchangeable between the spit and GT6, b=
ut the 1-3 gear sets could be. Alternately they could also use the same inp=
ut-layshaft gearset and then change the three lower ratio gearsets. In the=
latter case the input shafts could indeed be interchangeable...
If you look at the 1-3 ratios in Joe's link, the Spit and GT6 ratios do not=
scale by a fixed factor - indicating it is not simply a change of input-la=
yshaft ratio. This means that the 1-3 gearsets are different, and the input=
-layshaft could be common. Of course it's also possible they changed both t=
he layshaft and the 1-3 ratios..
Thank you,
Andrew

Since the GT6 gearbox has a different gearset than the Spitfire has, I can'=
t see how that would work. The first gear for the 3-rail Spitfire has a ra=
tio of 3.75 compared to 2.65 for the GT6, therefore the input shaft gear wo=

Subject: [Fot] GT6-Spitfire Transmission Conversion
I have a GT6 transmission in my spares collection and I have heard they can=
be converted to run in a Spitfire.
I'm interested in accomplishing this over the winter and I am looking for i=
nformation/advice on the best way to do it.
It is my understanding that you can have the GT6 input shaft either machine=
d to fit or you can cut the input shafts from a GT6 and a Spitfire and weld=
the Spitfire on the GT6 transmission.
Thanks
