In a recent acquisition of "stuff," there appeared a "mystery"
transmission, which my source told me was a Chevy Vega 5-speed. An
aquaintance, who is familiar with Vegas, tells me there never was a 5-speed
in any Vega. Neither does he recognize the box whan he looks at it. At
this stage I do not even know whether it is a 3-, 4-, 5-, or 6-speed. I
have the V8 newsletter, Issue VII, Vol. 1, which gives Warner T-5 ID
information, and this unit does not seem to match anything listed there
very closely at all. So I suspect it is not a T-5. I will describe it as
well as I can and hope someone can give me a clue. Anything at all would
be appreciated. Wish I had a way to put in a picture.
It is an all-aluminum case, in 3 parts. The main Box is
extensively ribbed and measures 9' from mounting flange to rear of box.
Behind that is another housing measuring only 1 7/8" front-to-back. The
tailhousing is last and measures 13 1/4" long. This makes the overall
length 23 3/4" from mounting flange to rear seal. It has the familiar
Chevrolet mounting bolt pattern and was bolted up to an F-85 bell housing
when I got it. On the front end the familiar-looking front bearing
retainer (usually removable) is a radially-ribbed integral part of the main
box casting with the "snout" for the clutch throwout bearing apparently
cast in or pressed in. The centerline of the shift-lever pivot is about 20
3/8" behind the front mounting flange.
The input shaft is 1 1/8" diameter with 10-splines. The output
shaft is about 1.156" diameter with either 26 or 27 fine splines-difficult
to count. The tail housing seems to have 2 possible mountings. Obviously
1 is a transverse flat pad with threaded holes at each end-they are about 3
3/4" on centers. The other mounting, if it is one, is a series of three
transverse holes in the tail-housing casting directly below the extreme
rear end.
The identification information I have found is the following: 1)
"Borg Warner" and the number 13-38-066-901 cast into the tail housing
directly below the shift lever on the right (passenger) side; 2) "BASIC 1"
cast into all 3 housings on the left (driver) side; and 3) Casting marks
(sun dots?) on all 3 castings marked "10" and "75" on opposite sides of the
circle and various patterns of raised dots in between-also a raised "blip"
in the center.
So-------what do I have here?
