Could be a bent trailing arm or bad tracking at the back. I had a similar
problem on my PI and solved it by replacing the arm and checking the
tracking.

Sounds like the overdrive fuse is getting too many amps. Possibly worn
wiring shorting on the body or gearbox or maybe the solenoid is out of
adjustment and drawing  the 20-25 amps (this will burn  out the solenoid
sooner or later). Try and check what current the solenoid is drawing. Do you
have a gearstick switch? ( poor wiring here blows fuses)  

On the Oil filter debate. My PI did 146,000 miles (233 000 Kms) with the
original filter and the bottom end was still just within limits when we
rebuilt the engine (cracked head and burnt valve). I think anybody with an
ounce of mechanical sympathy would adopt the starting procedure of Brian
Tink, I certainly did and still do with a spin on conversion. A good
quality, even original equipment, VW Golf 1800 GTI filter must surely be as
good a filter as the original Triumph. I've had no problems with them in
30,000 hard miles.
