PI servicing is mostly do it yourself if your extremely brave/stupid.

You normally get it wrong the first time and the ensuing black smoke and 10
mpg
spurs you on to a greater understanding. My car is finally reasonable after
months
of twiddling and some 'red herring' problems. I completely agree with Egil's
PI page
on not being to worried about exact mixtures and settings. Each car is
different and
once you get within 90% (checked on a rolling road) the remaining 10% is
acheived
by careful adjustment of the top adjustments. I have now touched all the
settings that
say DO NOT TOUCH!!!

Rear hubs easy to change- specialist job to rebuild

Overdrive.....never had a J-Type fail in 15 years apart from wiring.
Clean the filters when you have the gearbox off and it normally engages
quicker

Top speed is very debatable. All manual PI's should pull about 5500rpm in
top (110mph). Mine is modified
(357 cam) with a 3.7 diff and will pull about 5300 in OD top...
120-125mph... This was in the Northern
Territory Oz with no speed limits!!!!!

Final Word.

I'd love a 3.0 CSL BMW. They leave my car for dead in speed events over
here.
