- IMO the most likely explanation is a bad diode inside the alternator. A single open diode will allow it to still work some, at greatly reduced capacity, but I believe will cause exactly the symptom

- You, most probably, have a bad diode. This will eventually run your battery down. I strongly recommend that you pull the alternator and have it serviced at a decent alternator shop. A bit of solder
