I don't know about the alternators on the later Triumphs, but the
alternators (the factory calls them "generators", and I suppose they are, as
they do generate electricity) on the Saturn cars make a pronounced whining
sound when (I say not "if", but "when") there is a diode out. A Saturn tech
can diagnose an inoperative diode by hearing the car idle, even with the
hood closed.
